Open Canoeing Courses in the Lake District
Lakes Outdoor Experience offer Canadian Canoe sessions and journeys on the beautiful waterways in the Lake District, Cumbria. Canadian canoeing (also called open canoeing or open boating) can be done on a number of the great lakes in the Lake District; primarily Coniston Water, Windermere, Ullswater and Derwentwater.

You can choose to have a half day canoeing session or go for a full day of adventure; journey from one end of a lake to the other taking in points of interest and visiting islands along the way.
You will be shown the basic flat water skills of how to handle a Canadian Canoe (open boat) and what to do if you are unlucky enough to capsize or fall out of your boat. You will also be shown all sorts of fun things that you can do in a Canadian canoe.
Advanced River Adventures
Canadian canoeing sessions can also be done as guided trips on many of the Lake Districts' rivers such as the Derwent, the Leven and the River Lune. Prior to doing a river journey, you will need to have attended one of our lakes based courses or be able to demonstrate competence on flat water in handling an open boat.
Equipment provided for Canadian canoe sessions includes a wetsuit, cagoule, buoyancy aid and a helmet (for river trips) please bring with you an old pair of trainers that you don't mind getting wet and a fleece pullover to wear under the wetsuit.
Canadian Canoeing is ideal as part of a multi-activity day in conjunction with another activity such as ghyll scrambling in the Lake District and is ideal for groups, stag & hen parties as well as families and individuals.
- Prices are £70/person for a half day (4 hours) and £95/person for a full day (8 hours). Please note -these prices are for a minimum of two persons per booking.
- Group bookings discount and children’s rates are also available. Please enquire for details.
- Please note - we do not offer a public Canoe Hire service.
